Keeping the spark plug wires connected to the distributor is very necessary to run the engine well. These wires ignite the air and fuel mixtures and cause combustion that leads the engine to run.
However, if the spark plugs are not connected to the distributor on an appropriate firing order, they won’t get the electricity for combustion. And, ultimately your vehicle’s engine won’t start anyway.
So, it’s important to know how to connect spark plug wires to the distributor.
Here, in this article, we are going to let you know the correct procedure for connecting spark plug wires to the distributor step by step. So, you won’t face any problems while connecting them.
How To Connect Spark Plug Wires To The Distributor?
Usually, there lie three key components which ensure that the spark plug wires are connected properly according to the correct firing order. These key components are-
- Firing order
- Numbering of the cylinder and
- The direction of the distributor rotation.
All these key components let you easily understand the whole connection procedure of the spark plug wires. And, if you know about them, it will be very easy for you to complete your wiring connection project.

All right, so with the incorporation of these three key components, we will let you know how you can connect the wires to the distributor on an appropriate firing order. We will share the process according to the step and the steps are as follows-
1. Get the repair manual for your specific vehicle model
The first step in this process is to get the repair manual for your specific car model. This is because; this repair manual will help you to see the correct firing order as well as the wiring diagram for the spark plug wires. So, when you have all this in your hands, it will be easier for you to understand the whole process.

You can get the repair manual from any local auto part store. Or, you can have this while you are going to visit the car dealership service center. You also can search for this on the internet to know the process. Connection of the wires is not a long process. And, having this manual will make it so easy for you.
2. Observe the direction of distributor rotation
To connect the spark plug wires to the distributor, the first thing you have to know is the direction of distributor rotor rotation. For that, at first, you have to remove the distributor cap. In this part, all the four spark plug wires are connected to the distributor.

This is placed at the top of the engine and under this cap, the distributor rotor is located. This rotor can move to spin clockwise or counterclockwise. Yet, it won’t move in both directions. So, it’s necessary to observe in which direction the rotor spins.
However, in this step, you need to use a marker to make 2 lines while you are unlatching the two latches that hold the distributor cap. One line will be on the distributor cap and the second line will be on the distributor body. And, after taking note of distributor rotation direction, you have to reconnect the cap in the same location.
3. Find the number one firing terminal of the distributor
Once, you have observed the distributor rotation direction, the next step is to find the number one firing terminal of the distributor. In this step, we recommend you to find that in the repair manual that you get for your specific model. There are so many distributor caps that mark the number 1 terminal when they are manufactured.

And, if you don’t have this, you can also find that pointing out the rotor of the distributor to the number 1 terminal. For this, you have to manually turn on your vehicle’s engine. You need to do this until the crankshaft, as well as camshaft timing marks, line up.
4. Find the number one cylinder and connect the number one firing terminal to it
The next step is to find the number 1 cylinder and connect the number one firing terminal to it. You need to find the number one cylinder on the engine block. You can get it from the repairs manual as it has the cylinder block numbering format.

Usually, all the cylinders in the engine are numbered. And, also they are located and worked differently depending on your vehicle’s model. So, after finding the number 1 cylinder, you have to connect the spark plug wires between the number 1 cylinder and the number 1 terminal of the distributor’s.
5. Connect the other spark plug wires to the distributor
In this step, the first thing is to remember in which direction the distributor rotor rotation spins around clockwise or counterclockwise. By then, you have to connect the other spark plug wires to the distributor according to the correct firing order.
This firing order starts at the distributor’s number one terminal. It continues to move either clockwise or counterclockwise until it reaches the number 1 terminal again.
Usually, the firing order is like 1, 3, 2, 4. However, this firing order can be different according to your car model and especially if it has more than four cylinders. But, the connecting procedure is almost the same.

Yet, if your car’s owner manual provides a firing order as 1, 3, 2, 4 and the distributor rotor moves clockwise, then you need to connect cylinder number three to the distributor terminal immediately to the number one terminal clockwise. You also have to connect cylinder number two immediately to the third terminal and cylinder number four immediately to the number two-terminal in a clockwise fashion in a similar way.

6. Testing of the connections
Before starting, you need to test each spark plug wire. Besides, make sure you’ve completed all of the processes listed above. Here, the thing you have to do is compare them to the manual’s recommended firing order. After that, you should double-check that everything is connected in the correct order and also to the correct distributor terminal.
The thing you’ll need to know to succeed in the wiring connection to the distributor is that understanding the above-mentioned crucial components. However, this guide will show you how to connect spark plug wires to the distributor successfully.
By following the process step by step you can complete the wiring connection task in minutes without any additional assistance. And also, don’t forget to ensure that your connected spark plug wires get the electricity at the proper moment to run your engine.
