- The VCT (variable cam timing) solenoids are controlled by the oil that directs high-pressure engine oil to retreat the cam timing.
- But, when the pressure of this oil decreases due to the damaged solenoid or cam journals then it causes the failure of the cam phaser. This causes loud knocking noise from the engine.

How To Quiet Cam Phaser Noise? Steps You Have To Follow:-
To quiet your cam phaser noise by fixing it, you need to follow several steps. These steps are the following-
- To fix the camshaft phaser, you first need to pull the airbox as well as the intake snorkel from your vehicle’s engine.
- After that, the next step is pulling the harness to uncover the valve covers. Not only that but also you need to pull the PCV breather line, the hose, and all the ignition coils. By doing so, the harness that goes over the valves will be disconnected.
- Then you have to pull the eight-millimeter bolts for the left-hand valve cover. This bolt bolts the oil dipstick to the cylinder head near the camshaft-phasers. In this step, make sure that you have cleared all the mud and stuff by the compressed air before opening the engine.
- After pulling the eight-millimeter bolts, the next step is to clear any residual dirt. So, the dirt can’t fall while opening it.
- As both of the valves are off so in this step you need to put the crankshaft keyway at a 12 o’clock position. Here, there are 3 key ways where one has timing into the pulley and that is needed to put at one o’clock position. This positioning will help you pull out the rocker arm from both sides.
- After that, you need to pull the center rocker arm for the number one cylinder and also two intake rocker arms for the number four-cylinder on the right-hand engine bank.
- Then you have to pull two intake rocker arms on the number five-cylinder and also pull the exhaust on the number eight-cylinder on the left-hand bank. After pulling them, you need to pull the roller followers also and keep them in order.
- The next step is to loosen the fifteen-millimeter bolt. This bolt holds the actual phaser to the cam. Then you need to break torque on it for getting one full turn loose. This will help you to loosen up so you can easily go to your final positioning of the crankshaft.
- Then the cam sensor needs to be put out. So it won’t get damaged while going in or out with the new cam phasers.
- By then you can now start turning the crankshaft to the final positioning and bring back it at the 6 o’clock position now.
- To position the timing chain get timing wet cheese and give it a good wedge push between the two sides of the chain. This will hold the timing chain so it can’t come off the crankshaft sprocket.
- Then you need to mark the timing chain to the old cam phaser. This is one of the most important steps to fix the cam phasers.
- After that you will have to pull the cam phaser off by taking the fifteen-millimeter bolt out. So, the camshaft will not spin as they are in a neutral position. Besides, you need to take the timing chain off to remove it from the engine.
- Finally get a new bolt for your new cam phaser and also marks it with a little paint mark. And, while bolting back with the new bolts you also need to ensure that the timing wedge is in there.
- The last thing you have to do is to replace all the stuff and bring them back to the previous position. And, now you are done with it and get a quiet cam phaser.
